“She looks stunning,” Doug told Amanda over the phone. “Everything’s going great. Stein seems to be happy with all of it—the locations, the wardrobe, the light, everything. And Katie looks fantastic.”

Amanda was silent for so long that he began to wonder if she’d walked away from the phone.

Then she said crisply, “She should have an assistant. Someone who’ll handle all the everyday things for her. Start that ball rolling, and run everyone on your short list past me. Someone efficient, of course. Not too attractive, but certainly not dowdy. With their own car.”

“She hasn’t mentioned needing—”

“They never do. It’s either something they want right away, or they drive themselves into nervous exhaustion thinking they can do everything themselves.” She paused. “She can’t keep going to the market looking like an elementary school teacher, Douglas. This layout is going to push her up to another level. She’ll need to maintain that image.”

Her tone said, Just get it done.

Then the call was disconnected, and Doug was left standing in the woods with the phone in his hand, wondering why Amanda’s own assistant couldn’t start putting together a list of candidates. For every step forward he seemed to be taking with Amanda Reign, he was pushed two steps back—although sometimes he seemed to be standing on every possible step, all at the same time.

The next thing he knew, she’d have him going over to Katie’s condo every morning to pick out her clothes for her.

Rather than go back to watching the photo shoot, he wandered a little farther into the woods, admiring the peacefulness of his surroundings. In the distance, he could see glimpses of a few houses, and he could faintly hear what sounded like a lawn mower, but no one had ventured over this way to gawk at or interfere with the shoot. That seemed odd when he thought about it. Surely the residents of Twin Falls knew what was going on.

Don’t tempt fate, he told himself. It’s all going smoothly so far. Don’t mess it up.

What he’d told Amanda was the truth: Katie looked fabulous, whether the outfit she was modeling was casual or sophisticated, low-key or full-on glam. Even at the red carpet events she’d attended, she hadn’t looked this spectacular, and he wondered if it had something to do with being here in her home town rather than under the bright lights of Hollywood.

Maybe the light here was different.

Either way, he’d had to take a break from watching the shoot. It felt a little overwhelming, seeing her like that—like the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. She and Stein seemed to work well together, and rather than stressing her out, the photographer’s instructions seemed to bring out the best in her. Doug had no doubt at all that this shoot would accomplish exactly what Amanda intended it to, and that Katie would come out of it more popular than ever. She’d leave her co-star Ellery in the dust. Next season, she’d be the one all the talk shows would want to book.
